Of the Bookshelf| The Mason List

Alex Tanner has been through the good and the bad. She grew close to her mother in a dream home until cancer takes the lasts bits of her away making her and her dad move away to an unknown city without much more than what they had in their old car. They need a plan and a knock on the car window may bring the answer to all their prayers.
A wealthy doctor and his wife may bring some hope for her father, but not for her, she's done with charity. That's until he sees Jess, the doctor's son, the one that will make life better at least for a few years, because nothing lasts forever.
What I liked:

  • The connection I felt with the main character, Alex. I got where she was coming from for the most part of the book. Although towards the end she took everything to a level in which neither of them where going to be happy.
  • Jess was my favourite character, he was a boy next door. He was sweet, caring and most importantly, he was so selfless that he took care of Alex before everyone else.
  • The ending. You get glimpses of what goes on in the present but it's never clear what happens until you reach the end. It was a good way of letting go of the past while moving on into the present.
What I didn't like:
  • Alex´s temper tantrums were too much at times. It became a lot more than just a troubled teen, she got into so much trouble that only Jess was able to help her fix her mess.
  • The "fillers", there were parts that were unnecessary for me and that slowed the story a little bit too much for me.
It's an amazing book if you are looking for a Y/A, N/A novel with a little twist. It shows the not so rosy part of love stories and portraits the struggle of growing up without having the perfect life. For me it's a 4 out of 5.
